Description
Toward the end of November the first males begin to arrive and sort out the hierarchy of dominant bulls. Males use posturing, vocalizations, and actual combat to determine who will be the dominant males, also called alpha bulls, or beachmasters. By late December there is a lot of activity at the rookery. Elephant seals have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm in the cold waters where they go to forage for food, but a scarf is always a wise addition to beat the cold! Celebrate the season with this jolly elephant seal!
