They are among the deepest diving marine mammals, descending on average 1000-2000 feet to forage for food and occasionally diving 5000 feet or more. At that depth, mammalian competition for food is limited. Imagine that! These incredible marine mammals, which we have the pleasure of viewing on the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, are adept in a world so mysterious and unknown to us: the remote depths of the ocean.
