Description

There is nothing quite like the sight of two male elephant seals sparring. These massive animals can reach up to 15 feet in length and 5,000 pounds in weight. Luckily, they develop chest shields which are callused areas on their chest that protect them from injury. Males start developing their proboscis (nose) at around age 5. However, male juveniles, without their developed noses, can often be seen practicing their sparring skills. This is an excellent way to determine if a juvenile is a male or female as this sparring practice is only exhibited by male seals.

Pick up your post card today to remember the incredible males sparring for dominance.
