Located on the Pacific coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Cambria developed as a hub for lumbering, mining, whaling and dairying in the 19th century. As it became increasingly important to adopt sustainable land stewardship practices over the last 20 years, protection of the forests, watersheds and marine life increased. Currently approximately 68% of the Cambria pines oak forest is protected. The highway north from Cambria was developed in 1937 and Hearst Castle was opened as a State Park in 1958. These developments combined with affordable automobiles and the construction of roads to the east turned the locale into a vacation destination.
