Orca (Killer Whale) (Orcinus orca)
The Orca’s exposure on television, in movies, and at oceanariums has made it an icon. As recently as the ’60s, Orcas, also known as “Killer Whales”, were feared and persecuted; however, after a few individuals were brought into captivity and trained, the public’s view of them was transformed. Today, these whales are much loved. In case you are wondering, there are orca populations off the California Central coast!
About the illustrator: Pieter Arend Folkens, award- winning marine mammals conservationist and artist, has illustrated numerous publications appearing in 21 languages in 30 countries, including the National Audubon Society Guide to Marine Mammals of the World, from which this illustration is taken.
