Description

Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris)

The Northern Elephant Seal is the largest phocid pinniped in the Northern Hemisphere. Commercial sealers hunted them so intensively that the species was nearly extinct by the late 1800’s. Perhaps a few dozen at most survived into the 20th century, but the population has since increased steadily in number and range. Today the largest colony is located on the Channel Islands. However the largest mainland rookery is currently the Piedras Blancas Rookery right here in San Simeon, CA.

Customized for the Piedras Blancas Rookery, this card features a full-color, classic illustration of a male and female northern elephant seal by award-winning marine mammal conservationist and artist, Pieter Arend Folkens.
