There is nothing quite like the sight of two male elephant seals sparring. These massive animals can reach up to 15 feet long and weigh 5,000 pounds. Luckily, they develop chest fields which are callused areas on their chest that protect them from injury. Males start developing their proboscis nose at around age 6. However, male juveniles can often be seen practicing their sparring skills. This is an excellent way to determine if a juvenile is a male or female, because this sparring practice is only done by male seals.
