Elephant seals are mammals that have made extraordinary adaptations that allow them to spend most of their lives at sea, diving to incredible depths for food. They are among the deepest diving marine mammals, descending on average 1000-2000 feet to forage for food, occasionally diving 5000 feet or more. At that depth, mammalian competition for food is limited. Imagine that! These incredible marine mammals, that we have the pleasure of viewing on the Piedras Blancas Rookery, are adept in a world so mysterious and unknown to us, the deep depths of the ocean.
